SERVPRO® of Gold Coast /Lincoln Park /Lakeview respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day and restore property damage caused by ice dams in the Lincoln Park area. Whenever icicles appear on a roofline, you can be sure that an ice dam has formed and is preventing water from draining into rain gutters and downspouts. According to the University of Minnesota Extension (UMN), there are several ways ice dams can form. Here are some examples from UMN:

  • For ice dams to form there must be snow on the roof, and at the same time, higher portions of the roof’s outside surface must be above 32 degrees Fahrenheit while lower surfaces are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Heat loss from a house
  • Nonuniform roof surface temperatures

Any water behind the ice dam that remains in a liquid state can penetrate underneath the roof shingles and seep into other openings in the exterior roof covering and can enter the attic space and cause water damage.
