Water Intrusion in Lincoln Park?

5/3/2021 (Permalink)

A clean, dry, basement is shown. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Chicago.

Lincoln Park Basement Blues.

Water intrusion happens when the water around a home’s exterior finds its way inside the structure. Many times, water intrusion happens after a big storm or snowmelt, and the water seeps in through cracks in the foundation or through broken or compromised seals around doors and windows. Water intrusion can also be caused by poor drainage around the house. SERVPRO® of Gold Coast /Lincoln Park /Lakeview has been mitigating water damage for Lincoln Park residents for years and our fast response time is key to minimizing further damage and keeping the cost of the repairs down. Here is a tip from the Insurance Information Institute to prevent water seepage in your basement:

  • Reseal your basement

Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you've never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.

Ice Dam Damage in Lincoln Park?

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

A closeup of large icicles hanging on the side of a roof are shown. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Chicago.

SERVPRO® of Gold Coast /Lincoln Park /Lakeview respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day and restore property damage caused by ice dams in the Lincoln Park area. Whenever icicles appear on a roofline, you can be sure that an ice dam has formed and is preventing water from draining into rain gutters and downspouts. According to the University of Minnesota Extension (UMN), there are several ways ice dams can form. Here are some examples from UMN:

  • For ice dams to form there must be snow on the roof, and at the same time, higher portions of the roof’s outside surface must be above 32 degrees Fahrenheit while lower surfaces are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Heat loss from a house
  • Nonuniform roof surface temperatures

Any water behind the ice dam that remains in a liquid state can penetrate underneath the roof shingles and seep into other openings in the exterior roof covering and can enter the attic space and cause water damage.

Refrigerator Supply Line Failure in North Side?

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

A brand-new stainless-steel refrigerator ice dispenser is shown in closeup. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in the Gold Coast area.

North Side blues

I was so happy when my new refrigerator was delivered. I had always wanted a refrigerator with an ice dispenser, and now I had one. Unfortunately, my happiness was short-lived. The refrigerator was installed incorrectly. The supply line hose failed because the installer did not leave enough room behind the appliance, causing the line to kink and crimp, and the valve was overtightened, causing the valve to fail. Still, I didn’t know this at the time. A few days later, I noticed water pooling underneath my refrigerator. Oh, oh!

Even though it was really early in the morning, I called SERVPRO® of Gold Coast /Lincoln Park /Lakeview. Over the phone, they asked me some questions and told me what I could expect when they arrived. In a short time, they came out and immediately assessed the damage, and began the cleanup and restoration process. Here is the process they followed:

Step 1: Emergency Contact

Step 2: Inspection and Damage Assessment

Step 3: Water Removal/Water Extraction

Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification

Step 5: Cleaning and Repair

Water Bill Skyrocketing in Lakeview?

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

A closeup of a water bill is shown. We detect hidden water damage in the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview areas!

Do you have a hidden water leak in your Lakeview home?

Water damage can be one of the costliest repairs when hidden water leaks go undetected. Water is invasive and will seep into any porous surface, and if left untreated, it can damage and weaken the structural supports. But what if you have a hidden water leak? SERVPRO® of Gold Coast /Lincoln Park /Lakeview offers these tips from the United States Environmental Protection Agency on how to find out if your home has hidden water leaks.

  • Take a look at your water usage during a colder month, such as January or February. If a family of four exceeds 12,000 gallons per month, there are serious leaks.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.
  • Identify toilet leaks by placing a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after 10 minutes, you have a leak. (Be sure to flush immediately after the experiment to avoid staining the tank.)

Basement Flooding in the Gold Coast?

12/20/2020 (Permalink)

A basement floor is covered in water and a water extraction hose is leaning on the washing machine. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Chicago.

Basement Disaster in the Gold Coast

There is nothing worse than going down to the basement to put the laundry in the dryer and stepping onto a wet floor with socks on! Yuk! Evidently, my washing machine decided to malfunction, and water flooded the entire basement before I discovered the problem. Besides the water damage covering the floor, I had a lot of soggy cardboard boxes stacked along the wall now too.

I called SERVPRO® of Gold Coast /Lincoln Park /Lakeview. They asked me a series of questions and sent out a team of water restoration technicians to my Gold Coast home even though it was the middle of the night. They assessed the situation, and the technicians got to work immediately and disconnected the water hose, repacked and removed the soggy boxes from the room, and quickly extracted all the water from the floor. Then they set up air movers and dehumidifiers to remove the excess moisture from the air. The next day and cleaned and deodorized the area. When they were done, the basement looked like it did before the flooding disaster!

Water causes some of the most invasive damage that can happen to a structure, and the longer the water damage goes undetected or unresolved, the higher the repair costs will be. Keep your Pipes from Freezing

1/23/2020 (Permalink)

Copper pipe with icicles hanging down. Winter weather can cause your pipes to freeze. SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview can help if you experience water damage.

Freezing cold temperatures have arrived in the Chicagoland area.  Your home or business may be at risk for frozen pipes which can cause water damage to your property.

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages or kitchen cabinets.  A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage.  A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross.

  • Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets; running water is less likely to freeze.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

If your home or business has damage caused by winter weather, please call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview at (773) 935-6750.

Sewage Cleanup and Restoration

1/17/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a sewage backup, call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview at 773-935-6750.

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses.  SERVPRO of Gold Coat / Lincoln Park / Lakeview has specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water.  SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet.  If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness.  Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided.  Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

24 Hour Emergency Service

Water contaminated with sewage backup should be considered an emergency situation and dealt with as quickly as possible.  SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  We are water damage restoration specialists with specialized training, equipment and protective gear to safely restore your home or business.

Frozen Pipes can lead to Water Damage

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview can help if you experience water damage caused from winter weather.

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel.  If you live where temperatures sink below freezing level, you are also at risk for frozen pipes and ice dams, which can create a major disaster at your home or property.

FROZEN PIPES

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages or kitchen cabinets. A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage.  A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross.

  • Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

ICE DAMS

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice.  When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof ’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

If winter weather causes water damage to your property, SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview is available to help – Call us at (773) 935-6750.

Beware! - It's the water you don't see.

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

This is a Moisture Meter - just one of the many tools used by SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview to detect unseen water.

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time. The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview Professionals have the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform.  SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools that we use:

Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.

Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO to monitor the drying process.

Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity.  SERVPRO can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and deodorized.

Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate.

Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor-causing particles to deodorize structures, garments, automobiles and other places where cleaning cannot reach.

Tips to prevent Water Damage from your Washing Machine.

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

If your Washing Machine causes Water Damage to your home, call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview.

Washing machines are one of the most common sources of water damage in your home.

The failure of a water supply hose is the primary cause of loss.  This can be caused by:

  • Pinching the hose while installing or replacing a washing machine, causing a hairline break
  • A poor connection to either the washing machine or wall
  • The hose’s own aging, which can lead to brittleness

Washing machine drainage issues and internal leaks can also cause flooding to your home.

The most effective ways of preventing damage from your washing machine are to:

  • Replace the washing machine intake hose every 5 years
  • Check your sewer line after a storm, before running your washing machine
  • Don’t overload your washing machine
  • Have your machine professionally installed to avoid water line pinches and drainage issues
  • Shut off the intake valve behind your machine at the first sign of trouble
  • If you can’t access the intake valve, know how to shut off your home’s water main

SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview can help you if you experience water damage from your washing machine.

Failing Water Heater? Look for these signs!

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

Maintain your Water Heater to avoid water damage to your home.

Water heaters often work perfectly for a decade or more without any care, so they’re easy to neglect.  They are often located in a low traffic area, like a basement, an attic or in a closet.

Failing water heaters can cause significant damage to your home if they start leaking or even worse, if they burst leaving several gallons of water flowing through your home.

Here are a few things that may indicate if your water heater is starting to fail:

  • Water doesn't get as hot as it used to.
  • There's rust in water coming from your faucets or on your clothes.
  • Your hot water heater makes cracking and popping sounds when it's heating.
  • There's a metallic taste in your hot water.
  • Rust is forming on the outside bottom of your water heater.
  • A puddle is forming under your hot water heater.
  • The burner units have become clogged or rusty.

If you experience flooding from your water heater, call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview for assistance.  Call (773) 935-6750.

Tips on how to maintain your sump pump

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

If you experience water damage from a sump pump, call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview at (773) 935-6750.

The arrival of spring often signals lots of melting snow and heavy rainfall. If you have a damp basement or live in an area prone to flooding, you know that dealing with water damage can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare.

A sump pump can be an effective device for moving accumulated water away from your house and preventing costly repairs. Here are a few tips to keep your sump pump in good working order.

  • Ensure the unit is plugged in to a working ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet and the cord is in good shape.
  • Check the discharge pipe and vent hole for dirt, gravel and other debris. Clear any obstructions, as these cause the pump to work harder to drain the sump basin and increase the chance of overflowing.
  • Inspect the intake screen for clogs and remove any debris.
  • Remove any visible debris from the pit, and ensure the float component is unobstructed.
  • Test the pump by pouring a bucket of water into the basin. As the water level rises, the float should trigger the pump to activate and drain the water quickly.
  • If your pump has a backup battery, replace the battery every two to three years, or as directed by the manufacturer.

Cold Weather is coming! Look out for Frozen Pipes.

11/28/2017 (Permalink)

Frozen pipes can cause damage to your home or business.

Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

  • Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

How to Protect Pipes From Freezing

Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:

  • Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
  • Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
  • Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  • Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.

If you experience water damage in your home or business caused by a broken pipe, call us today at (773) 935-6750.

Ten tips to help prevent water damage to your home

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

Our equipment in action after a water loss.
  1. Disconnect hoses

Standing water in a hose may freeze back into the pipe. This may create an ice block that stops your water flow. The block may burst your pipes and create damage to walls, floor and foundation.

  1. Clean gutters and downspouts

Clean your gutters at least twice a year to avoid blockage and ice dams. Standing water can cause damage to your gutters and roof, and unmanaged overflow may create puddles that could damage your foundation.

Don't forget to clean downspouts to ensure water can flow through, and secure downspouts so that they point away from the home.

  1. Maintain trees and vegetation

Thriving shrubs can be a beautiful thing — except when their roots wrap around your pipes and break them. That's why it's important to minimize landscaping near utility pipes or, if necessary, remove trees and shrubs that have become too big.

Interior Measures to Prevent Water Damage

  1. Know your water main

Know the location of your water main, and shut it off if you leave for an extended amount of time.

  1. Check appliances regularly

Check and maintain your home appliances regularly for leaks, according to manufacturer's directions.

  1. Investigate leaks right away and fix promptly

If you ignore moisture damage or postpone making the necessary repairs, be prepared to experience mold, mildew, dry rot, or even structural damage to your home.

Keep in mind that homeowner's insurance provides coverage for damage that is sudden and accidental. Damage that results from lack of maintenance is not covered on a standard homeowner’s insurance policy.

  1. Upgrade washing machine hoses

Old, brittle or leaky washing machine hoses are among the most frequent causes of water loss for homeowners. Replace yours regularly to avoid a mighty mess and expensive damage.

  1. Install water detection devices

A water detector is a small electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor comes in contact with moisture. Its main benefit is that it detects low moisture levels or slow leaks that often go unnoticed. Install it near water heaters, sump pumps, washing machines, dishwashers and toilets to prevent extensive damage and mold growth.

  1. Check your water pressure

If the water pressure to your home is set too high, pipes and hoses may fail under the pressure. Buy a water pressure gauge at a local hardware store, attach it to an outside faucet, and turn the faucet to full force. The gauge will give you a reading of the home’s water pressure.

Typical residential water systems are designed for water pressure of 40 to 70 psi. If your home’s water pressure exceeds 100 psi, install a pressure regulator (which is available at hardware stores as well.)

  1. Monitor your water bill

Sometimes, the only way you know that water is leaking is taking a closer look at your water bill. If your usage jumps significantly from one month to the next without explanation, put your "water detective hat" on. Is there a leak in your crawlspace? Or, is it a pipe in your front yard? Don't leave mystery leaks unattended!

The Power of the Dehumidifier

8/23/2017 (Permalink)

Here is are some SERVPRO Dehumidifiers ready for action!

SERVPRO Franchises across the country use dehumidifiers of varying sizes to dry water losses and the structure to prevent mold growth and return your structure to its original state. These dehumidifiers aren’t like the ones that are in stores, but an industrial grade dehumidifier specific to flooding and various categories of water losses.

These are the benefits of the dehumidifiers that we use here at SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview:

  • An industrial grade dehumidifier aims to lower the air temperature of the room, so condensation can occur.
  • These dehumidifiers can also speed up the drying process because the technology of newer dehumidifiers is more efficient and lowers the cost.
  • Our dehumidifiers can be implemented into large-scale places like a gymnasium, pools and other large scale businesses and community centers.

The industrial grade dehumidifier can allow for a faster and more precise drying than simple fans or home dehumidifiers. For any questions about our equipment or any of our various services offered call SERVPRO of Gold Coast / Lincoln Park / Lakeview at 773-935-6750.
